The Hidden Islam
The Article 8 of the Italian Constitution grants the right to religious liberty to all and prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion. Yet, the exercise of collective Islamic religious rights is very problematic. There are only two official mosques in the whole of Italy despite a significant and growing Muslim population of over a million people. Through depicting the proliferation of industrial, makeshift places of worship, such as old warehouses, basements, garages and supermarkets, this project documents the resilient spirit of Italian Islamic communities who, though denied collective religious rights, retain autonomy by the reclamation of disused urban spaces.
The building owned by the “Cultural Islamic Association of Treviso” was stopped by the local government from being used as a place of worship. The community has to gather on the parking lot outside to be able to perform the prayer. Province of Treviso, Italy. 2009
